Impressions of the underwater world of the Red Sea. The structure of the film is based on so-called flicker films, in which the unconscious experience of the images is more important than the actual images. A completed segment from a larger work in progress, "Careless Reef'.
The West (SFO) is part of a series of films and film/video installations about geographical places on this earth. The film takes us to the desserts of California, Arizona, en Utah. Places where hardly any people visit, but who are very close to urban society. It is an observation made by a man and his (bolex) camera. The West (SFO) was nominated for Best Short Film at the Dutch film festival 2000'.
The work of Dutch filmmaker Gerard Holthuis is a unique blend of document, experiment and essay, captivating in its perfection of composition and montage. Holthuis (b. 1952) studied film at the Vrije Akademie in The Hague and has made more than a dozen films since 1979. His work has screened at countless international venues and has won awards from prestigious festivals in Tampere, Ann Arbor, Hamburg and twice at Media City. He is also co-founder ofFilmstad, a production company based it The Hague that finances short art films.
