Shane Hope

Shane Hope favors funk, folk, crafts and outsider vision over scientific visualization, and participates in handicrafts in general as an entry point for
engagement with biotechnology and thereafter. He produces what he calls Plug- Uppetry, Schmutz nD and Outsider Biotech. To do so, he uses materials
such as genetically modified mutant plants, dead foliage, fly tying gear, craft supplies
and schmutz.

Shane Hope was born in a Federal Trade Zone (or FTZ), a secure area that is physically within the U.S., but considered outside of U.S. Customs territory. He
was conceived in a roller rink, named after Alan Ladd’s popular portrayal in George Stevens’ Hollywood motion picture, and family myth has it that he is a
descendant of both Wild Bill Hickok and the founder of the Dunlop Tire Corporation. Shane now lives and works and rides a unicycle in Los Angeles, CA.

Shane’s work has been featured at Susanne Vielmetter Projects, LA, The Wight Biennial 2001, Wight Gallery, LA, Them!, Jay Grimm Gallery, New York,
NY, T.R.I.B.E., ECP, New York, NY, Violate Nature, Yucca Valley, CA, You’re Dead, Marcuse Gallery, UCSD, La Jolla, CA, Images Festival, Innis Town Hall,
