Strip / Tease
Curated by Douglas Chang
This program explores the paradox of layering in all its alluring, obscuring and ambiguous manifestations. The peeling off of layers can, in some circumstances, strip a subject down to its essence, exposing a truth that lies buried under false images and conventions. Yet it can also turn into its own kind of ritual fetish, teasing the numbed and dumbed-down consciousness along a path of red herrings leading it into an abyss of conspiracies and transgressions whose satisfaction lies forever just behind the next veil. At a time when nakedness is coveted but nudity condemned; when WMD remain perpetually out of reach, hidden somewhere in a gaping desert of "perhaps" at such a time, the ultimate aphrodisiac may be the search for truth itself. Can one version of truth be promoted without eclipsing others? And aren't even the layers we shed those garnishes of skin, clothing and environment endlessly receding from what we deem the central organ themselves part of the total reality from which truth gets its inherent value?
